Training for export
This report was written to identify the types of training currently available for UK producers, to assess whether that training is sufficient for them to exploit their films internationally and to make recommendations regarding film export training.
Key Findings
- Funding – most funding for UK producer training comes from Skillset
- Best practice / monitoring – there are no best practice guidelines for producer training and no reliable data on performance monitoring
- Courses – there is a range of courses on offer for learners of different levels
- Film export training – most of the courses cover export issues to some extent
- Financial assistance – there are grants and subsidies to help cover study costs
- Market awareness – there is the perception that UK producers' lack of market awareness makes it hard for them to reach an international audience
- Access to information – it is difficult to access information on film exports, training initiatives and funding opportunities
Recommendations
- Performance management – introduce best practice guidelines and evaluation and tracking processes for all courses
- Online resource – research the option of creating a shared online resource providing export information and identifying suitable training courses and funding initiatives
- General export training – encourage producers to undertake export training (UK publicly financed bodies to take the lead)
